Author Amy Tan Presents Lecture At Purdue Fort Wayne

New York Times Best-selling author Amy Tan presented a lecture Wednesday at Purdue-Fort Wayne’s Auer Performance Hall as part of this year’s Omnibus Lecture Series.

With vibrant blue hair and a soft spoken voice, Tan said she’s surprised how shy students can be when they meet her.

“I think I’m approachable,” she said, “I just think they respect me too much at times.”

Tan said those who aren’t shy, though, are quick to tell her how much they relate to her stories. She said she hopes her lecture will help guide students on how to best tell personal stories.

“It’s not about, ‘here’s how to be a writer,’” she said, “It’s about, you know, what is the experience that makes it so you’re the only person that can tell that story.”

Tan’s lecture included anecdotes about her relationship with her mother and key events which motivated her to become a writer.

Tan is author of six novels, including The Joy Luck Club, and The Kitchen God’s Wife.
