Public Schools Superintendents Call for More Funding

Superintendents from all four public school districts in Allen County joined  Greater Fort Wayne Inc. Thursday to call for more funding for all districts in the  state.

Districts across Indiana are facing budget problems – from the base amount every  district is afforded by the state, to the amount they’re allowed to collect from  property taxes, every Northeast Indiana superintendents agree – it’s not enough to  support their schools.

Dr. Wendy Robinson of Fort Wayne Community schools says the current funding  system keeps further dividing a pot of money that only goes so far. She says the  districts can’t handle another short-term solution.

Ron Turpin says there’s a larger economic case to be made for increasing  education funding. He’s the chairman of the Greater Fort Wayne Inc. Board of  Directors.

“In Indiana, education right now is not seen as an investment, it’s seen as an  expense," says Turpin. "And if you really want to make this place great, invest in the schools,  listen to the school leaders when you want to make decisions about the schools,  and we will provide for you the infrastructure for a great community.”

The superintendents don’t have a specific recommendation for what they’d like to  see, since all the districts have different circumstances.   They say they’ll continue to work together, and be more vocal to legislators about  what they need.
