What makes a good teacher? Indiana schools have over 200 different answers.

Indiana school districts, in fact, use 242 separate methods to evaluate their teachers, according to a StateImpact Indiana analysis of state data. It’s a messy process that’s led to concerns about erratic practices, inconsistent implementations and incomparable results.

Over the last five years, the number of English learners in Indiana grew faster than the national average. Today, five percent of all students in the state don’t speak English as their first language.

Lisa Dunn and Janice Hunter are teachers at Fort Wayne's Lakeside Middle School who both have a passion for teaching students about STEM concepts and careers. STEM is shorthand for "science, technology, engineering and math."

It's a passion that led them to Purdue University in West Lafayette over the summer, where they were selected to participate in a program called TechFit.
