If you’ve been feeling the urge lately to swing your partner ’round and ’round, you're not alone. Dancers, callers and musicians around the country are celebrating International Square Dance Month throughout the month of September.

To some, it’s old-fashioned entertainment. But it’s hardly a thing of the past. In fact, it’s flourishing right here in Northeast Indiana, as the Alles Family Barn Dance in Roanoke keeps the tradition alive.

Looking for the lowdown on the hoedown, WBOI's Julia Meek, invited Alles square dance caller Matt Rupley to the studio to share his square dancing story.

For more information on future dances and other events, check out the Alles Family Barn Dance website.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
