Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has passed away after a brief battle with cancer.

Author Michael Martone Brooding On His Hoosier Roots

Martone at large, always looking for a new angle, a sideways perspective to explore.

While author and Fort Wayne native Michael Martone has been a professor at the University of Alabama's creative Writing departent since 1996, his ever-growing list of books and accolades continues to reflect his fondness for all things Hoosier.

A scan of his titles, including "Alive and Dead in Indiana," "Fort Wayne is Seventh on Hitler's List," "Pensées: The Thoughts of Dan Quayle" and "The Blue Guide to Indiana" attests to his unique sense of humor, as well as his creative thought process and writing skills.

Photos and thoughts on the author's thermos bottle collection have found their way into Martone's latest work.

His latest offering, "Brooding," is a collection of essays, both meditative and formally inventive, considering all kinds of subjects, plus concepts of time and place. As always, his Indiana sensibilies are there to serve him well, including reflections on Kurt Vonnegut, one of Martone's own favorite authors.

When a flurry of new book readings and signings coincided with a local alumni award ceremony at the author's  high school, and brought him to town last week, WBOI's Julia Meek was pleased to welcome Michael into the studio and discuss how these Indiana roots have stolen his heart, shaped this passion, and honed his craft.

You can connect with Michael Martone and and find book and tour information onhis Facebook page.
