FWCS Approves Benefits Package For New Superintendent

The new Fort Wayne Community Schools superintendent will take home a base salary of $215,000 annually as part of a three-year contract negotiated with the school board. However, the identity of the new chief won’t be announced until after the board votes to approve the contract on Tuesday, May 26.

The board conducted a public hearing Monday evening to receive comments on the terms of the contract as part of a socially distanced internet meeting. The new superintendent will replace Wendy Robinson, who is retiring after 17 years at the helm of the state’s largest public school district.

In addition to the base salary, the new superintendent will receive the same benefits package given to other district administrators, as well as a $20,000 annuity, an automobile allowance, cell phone, and a technology stipend.

Board President Julia Hollingsworth said most of the questions raised by members of the public dealt with the length of the contract, and the possibility for contract extensions. The three-year contract can be extended for a maximum of five additional one-year terms, although the superintendent could remain in the job by mutual agreement with the board after the initial eight-year term expires.

She said the board elected to delay the announcement of the name until the contract is approved by the board and legally binding.

Board member Steve Corona, who has been involved in several superintendent contract negotiations over many years on the FWCS board, said the base salary is “pretty standard - we haven’t sold the ranch,” adding that the new chief will not be the highest paid superintendent in Indiana.

The board will meet in executive session at 4 p.m. on May 26 at North Side High School to vote on the contract. If the contract is approved, the new superintendent will be introduced to the community after the meeting, but ongoing pandemic precautions may alter the format of the introduction, Hollingsworth said.
