Fort Wayne Voters Elect New City Clerk

Fort Wayne has elected a new City Clerk.

Republican Lana Keesling will take over the office beginning January 1, making her the first Republican to be elected to the position of City Clerk in nearly four decades.

Keesling says she’s ready to get to work.

“Obviously people were ready for change, and I’m very excited about the opportunity to serve the people and to work with the citizens of Fort Wayne and work with the city employees and the county employees,” she said.

Keesling won 65% of the vote over Democratic candidate Angie Davis.

Davis has been the subject of controversy over the last month amid accusations of electioneering in the City Clerk’s office. She resigned her post last Friday, but she said she would serve if she won the election.

Fort Wayne’s newest Clerk says her first objective is to restore public trust within the City Clerk’s office.

“I think come January 1, it’s going to be working with the employees and working with the citizens and seeing what we need to do to rebuild that trust, starting from ground zero and moving forward,” said Keesling.

Last week, Mayor Tom Henry appointed Republican Don Schmidt for the role of Interim City Clerk following Angie Davis’s resignation.
