Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry announced Tuesday a proposal to create a Quimby Village Tax Increment Finance district. The proposed TIF district would help revitalize infrastructure and buildings like the Clyde Theatre.
A TIF district is an area in which generated taxes would go toward improving infrastructure like roads and sidewalks within the region.
The Quimby Village TIF district would include an area ending at Bluffton Road to the south, Broadway to the east, Nuttman and Kinsmoor avenues to the north and Brooklyn Avenue to the west.
Rick Kinney is the owner of Clyde Theatre, which he says has been closed since the late 1990s and needs to be renovated before opening. Kinney says he hopes the TIF district--and his theatre--revitalize the area.
“What I’m looking forward to is the beginning of the revitalization of Quimby Village and this small southwest quadrant of Fort Wayne,” Kinney said.
Kinney’s goal is to open the theatre by the end of 2016.
If the TIF district is approved by the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission on December 14, it will go before the Fort Wayne Plan Commission and City Council. It would then need to be brought before the Redevelopment Commission again. Adoption of the resolution could be completed by February 2016.
