Area Pools Decide to Remain Closed for the Summer

In light of coronavirus concerns continuing on into the summer, several cities are deciding to keep public pools closed for the season.

Thursday, Fort Wayne announced that while many parks and facilities would re-open, city pools would remain closed. Earlier this week, New Haven announced they wouldn’t be reopening Jury Pool for the summer.

Mike Clendenen is the superintendent of New Haven’s Parks and Recreation department. He says the decision not to reopen this year was a difficult one to make.

“There was a lot of variables and we have been dealing with this for over a month and a half, trying to figure out what is our summer going to look like. Just from the standpoint that we knew social distancing would be an issue and how do we do that.”

Clendenen says the decision came down to the final guidelines from the Indiana State Department of Health. He says they employ 60-70 teenagers during the summer and they didn’t want to put their staff or customers in a situation that could be dangerous to their health.

Clendenen says they considered waiting until later in the summer to open, but it would have meant a change to the experience of visiting the pool.
