Allen County Gets New Health Commissioner

The Allen County Health Department appointed a new commissioner Thursday evening after a unanimous vote on the nominee.

Dr. Matthew Sutter will take over for Dr. Deborah McMahan, who is set to retire on June 5 after 20 years in the position.

Boardmember Dr. James Cameron says Sutter has shown the community what he can do as a leader over the past decade.

“I think that we’ve all had the opportunity to see him in work and beyond the clinical standpoint in the emergency room and the leadership standpoint, he’s got some very interesting qualifications as well," Cameron said. "Which will add, I think, a different dimension to how he approaches this position.”

Sutter is an emergency medicine physician at Adams County Memorial and has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare and public safety in northeast Indiana.

After McMahan announced her retirement earlier this year, a committee of three executive board members began a search for qualified candidates before narrowing it down to Sutter.

His tentative start date is June 15. The position will be part-time, making Sutter responsible for high-level duties of the medical director. Another part-time physician will be hired later to fulfill a clinical role alongside the department’s full-time medical staff.
