Students rode in a line down sidewalks in Jonathon Oaks, following Bike Patrol Officers on Wednesday, May 5, 2021.

They were joined by teachers and bike patrol officers to ensure the trip was made safely. Principal Susan Tieman said with so many students in biking or walking distance, it's important to encourage safe habits.

“We just wanted to provide our students the opportunity as a school family to ride our bikes to school together and practice being safe and healthy living," Tieman said.

Last month, the school also offered a bike safety program to fourth and fifth graders where they brought in the Fort Wayne Police Department Bike Patrol Officers and staff from the Parkview Trauma Center to share safety tips and demonstrate the importance of helmets.

The day is also meant to be a reminder to adult drivers to be aware and patient as students walk or bike to school.
