Plymouth Congregational Church Divests Itself From Fossil Fuels in Continued 'Green' Efforts

Plymouth Congregational Church of Fort Wayne announced last week it would be divesting its endowment from coal, oil and natural gas companies.

The decision came just as the United Nations released its latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which the church said in a press release “makes it clear that climate change is real, it’s here and it’s already causing damage.”

Senior Pastor Reverend Timothy Murphy says Plymouth has long been a church that’s strived to care for the environment. The church has solar panels, recycles and reduces waste.

“But those are small scale things and the scope of the situation is such that it’s past time to do this.”

The move will end the church’s investments in any standalone companies that work in the fossil fuel industry. Murphy says the exception is mutual funds, which are more complicated because of how many companies they may own.

Murphy says protecting the earth from climate change is a religious issue for him because God tasked people with loving the earth as He does.
