Bunche Montessori Early Childhood Center participated in the Great American Cleanup Friday, which encourages students to help take care of their space and keep the environment clean.
Montessori schools encourage caring for nature as part of their normal philosophy, but this year Bunche took the extra step to be a part of the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program.
Tamara Mullins is the principal at Bunche. She said partaking in the cleanup is a continuation of things students are already doing and talking about in their classrooms.
“We’ve been talking about taking care of our community, we’ve been talking about gardens and giving those things to our community,” Mullins said.
Students ventured back outside after recess donning neon green shirts and purple gloves to scour the grounds for litter. Teachers were particular about what they were meant to pick up – and what they should get a teacher for, like glass or rusted items.
Mullins said she hopes students come to understand that their playground and school are their community and they should help take care of it.
