Fort Wayne Community Schools proposed budget could lead to an overall 3-percent tax decrease.

The budget was presented to the school board on Monday, with a 345 million dollar spending plan. The tax rate is expected to decrease from 92.78 cents to 90.21 cents.

FWCS spokesperson Krista Stockman said the decrease is due to increased property values.

“So, it doesn’t necessarily mean that people will see a smaller tax bill, although some people might," she said. "It just means that the rate is lower.”

Stockman also said the district plans to make changes to their buses, which will lead to lower cleaning and maintenance costs. The district plans to purchase more small buses, which don’t require a commercial driver’s license to operate, to serve areas with less students.

The school board will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget at the meeting on Sept. 26, and will vote on it at the Oct. 10 meeting.
