Ball State Postpones All 2020 Graduation Ceremonies

Ball State University via Facebook

Ball State University is postponing all graduation ceremonies this year because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The university previously postponed spring and summer commencement plans, rescheduling both for a ceremony on October 10.  Now Ball State president Geoffrey Mearns says that ceremony and one scheduled for December to honor winter graduates will not be held.

“From the experiences of other campuses and other communities, it’s those large events where it only takes one or a very small number of infected people to spread the virus to many more people.”

Mearns says he is “cautiously optimistic” a May 2021 graduation ceremony can take place.

The university has also moved its Homecoming activities and Family Weekend to the spring.

According to the school, class of 2020 graduates will be welcome to participate in the May ceremony or any future ceremonies to be recognized.

And as it said when it previously postponed commencements earlier this year, Ball State will continue to award degrees to students by mail when earned, not waiting for a formal ceremony.
