City Reminds Residents Of Assistance During Coronavirus

Mayor Tom Henry and officials from the City of Fort Wayne provided an update on utility services, fees and shut-offs as the coronavirus situation continues.

Fort Wayne City Utilities director Kumar Menon reminded residents that service disconnections and meter readings have been suspended until further notice, but insisted residents stay up to date on their balances if they can.

“If you do not have water at home, call us. 427-1234. Call us. If you have trouble paying your bills, call us. Again, 427-1234. We can work with you," Menon said. "Whatever it takes to make sure that you have clean water available, that is the number one way of making sure you are safe and healthy.”

NIPSCO and Indiana Michigan Power issued statements with the same language: payments to those services will not be suspended, but shut-offs and disconnections will be, so failure to pay can still lead to a compounding balance over time.

Henry remained upbeat about the city’s ability to work through the coronavirus pandemic.

“A community cannot survive without the hopes and dreams and work of its citizens. And that’s where it’s at right now, in the City of Fort Wayne and the County of Allen, is hope. With hope that things will get better. And they will.”

He informed customers served by the Allen County Regional Water and Sewer District that the Allen County Board of Commissioners is providing a grant to the district to offer ratepayers a one-time, 50% credit on an upcoming residential sewer bill. Officials also encouraged residents to donate blood if they are able to.

The closure of Citizens Square was also extended to April 6.
