Fort Wayne Composer Writes Music for Papal Visit

Courtesy/Bob Hobby
Bob Hobby, Music Director of Trinity English Lutheran Church, regards this invitation to compose music for Pope Francis' visit to the US a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

When Pope Francis attends the papal mass this Friday evening in New York City's Madison Square Garden, one musical offering will come from Fort Wayne.

An arrangement of the hymn, "Alleluia, Sing to Jesus" was composed especially for the occasion by Bob Hobby, music director at Trinity English Lutheran Church, and is one of two pieces Hobby prepared for the papal visit.

Before he left for the festivities, he met with WBOI's Julia Meek to share his insights on this once-in-a-lifetime experience, and an exclusive sampling of his composition.

Hobby's scoring of Widor's "TuEsPetrus" will be part of the Prayer Service at New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral  this Thursday, and "Alleluia, Sing to Jesus" will be performed at the Papal Mass in Madison Square Garden on Friday evening.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
