Fort Wayne Council To Reassess Consulting Contract Threshold

A measure calling for greater transparency and collaboration in city consulting contracts will be heard before City Council during its lame duck session on November 12.

2nd District Republican councilman Russ Jehl is proposing the measure. It would require prior ratification and approval from Council on any consulting contracts related services in Fort Wayne at or exceeding $10,000. The current threshold is $100,000.

Jehl notes that the ordinance amendment was partly inspired by the consulting contract that led to the city agreeing to terms with solid waste management provider, Red River.

“You do want to see more of these consulting contracts, especially after our experience with the garbage consultant who was nowhere to be found, and then nowhere to be seen when the garbage wasn’t getting picked up,” Jehl said.

Jehl says that while the measure isn’t ready just yet, he’s made “great progress” in conversations with city controller Garry Morr.

While the proposal will be heard after the municipal elections, the current Council will be the ones to discuss it on November 12 and eventually make the vote.
