Fort Wayne Officer Involved In Fatal Shooting

Fort Wayne Police Department

The Indiana State Police and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating an early morning fatal shooting Wednesday involving a Fort Wayne Police officer. It is the first fatal police-action shooting in more than two years.

According to a press release, the officer was responding to the sound of gunshots in a neighborhood in southeast Fort Wayne. As the officer attempted to pull over a vehicle in the area, the driver of the vehicle fled.

After a short chase, the driver crashed the car into what appeared to be a vacant house in the area of the 3600 block of Oliver Street. During the course of the incident at least one shot was fired, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 26-year-old Shaquille I. Kelly of Fort Wayne  was pronounced dead at the scene. He died by a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Allen County Coroner.

Kelly’s death is Allen County’s 8th homicide for 2019.
