ICU Capacity Tightens In Northeast Indiana As COVID-19 Rates Race Upward

ICU bed capacity in northeastern Indiana is down to just under 17 percent as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise. 

Nearly 32 percent of northeast Indiana’s ICUs are full of patients with the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

Statewide, cases hit a record high of 8,315 cases reported Saturday from Friday. Sunday’s total from Saturday was down to 6,825, the second highest total recorded. 

LaGrange County remains in the red zone for community spread with a score of 3, with a 7-day positivity rate of over 20 percent.

All other northeast Indiana counties are in the orange, with scores of 2.5. Only Adams, Huntington and Wabash counties have scores of 2, and 7-day positivity rates of less than 10 percent.

Statewide, hospitalizations were up to 2,634. ICU bed capacity was better statewide than in northeast Indiana, with over 25 percent available, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

 
Following are the weekend totals for northeast Indiana counties and updated deaths due to COVID-19;

  • Adams County: 67 new cases, for 1,301 total. No new deaths recorded, 15 total deaths
  • Allen County: 1,072 new cases, for 14,269 total. Two new deaths, for 264 total.
  • DeKalb County: 225 new cases, for 1,402 total. No new deaths recorded, 17 total deaths.
  • Huntington County: 97 new cases, for 900 total. No new deaths, seven total deaths.
  • Kosciusko County: 238 new cases, for 3,474 total. No new deaths, 38 total deaths.
  • LaGrange County: 71 new cases, for 1,216 total. No new deaths, 23 total deaths.
  • Noble County: 191 new cases, for 2,056 total. No new deaths, 40 total deaths.
  • Steuben County: 325 new cases, for 1,125 total. One new death recorded, 12 total deaths.
  • Wabash County: 109 new cases, for 1,106 total. No new deaths, 16 total deaths.
  • Whitley County: 93 new cases, for 1,014 total. No new deaths, seven total deaths.
