Zach Bernard/WBOI News

Northeast Indiana is expected to get significant snowfall and cold temperatures this weekend, and 89.1 WBOI will provide updates as the weekend progresses.

UPDATED: Saturday, Jan. 19, 11:00 am)

A travel advisory is in effect for Allen County until further notice. The official statement, as released by the Allen County Office of Homeland Security:

The Allen County Office of Homeland Security has issued a travel advisory for Allen County, Indiana. Continued snow fall and winds are creating hazardous travel conditions throughout the county. A Travel Advisory is the lowest level of travel advisory and means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid these areas.

In addition, a winter storm warning is currently in effect until 7 pm, or further notice. The full weekend forecast, provided by the National Weather Service of Northern Indiana:

  • Saturday: Snow will likely continue throughout the day. Temperature will continue to fall, down to 23 degrees by 4 pm (wind chill: 8 degrees). 3-7 inches of snow are anticipated.

  • Saturday Overnight: Snow will continue into the evening, with another 1-2 inches possible. Temperature will drop to 7 degrees (wind chill: -8 degrees). Snow is expected to stop early Sunday morning.

  • Sunday: Sunny with an afternoon high of 14 degrees (wind chill: 4 degrees).

The City of Fort Wayne will also be putting its Winter Contingency/Emergency Shelter Plan into action this weekend.
The city’s plan lists the Rescue Mission as the primary provider and point of entry for shelter and food for those who need assistance. If the Rescue Mission cannot provide shelter or food, it will make arrangements with one of the city’s secondary providers in the plan: Just Neighbors Interfaith Homeless Network, Christian Praise and Fellowship Church and the Salvation Army.

In addition, Fort Wayne’s Parks & Recreation Department will open warming centers if the temperature drops below 10 degrees.

The 211 Resource Center, operated by United Way, will be active and direct those in need how to access services provided by the plan.
