Tax Dollar Investments Under Review

Fort Wayne City Council heard a proposal Tuesday night seeking to “maximize the business climate in the city and Allen County to drive investment, while being mindful of the public dollars being invested.”

A working group featuring bipartisan Council representation and economic development officials met for the last few months to determine the best stewardship of tax dollars with phase-ins and deferrals. Since 2013, Council has terminated roughly 18 phase-ins for not being compliant.

Rules and regulations for tax abatements are also addressed in the proposal, seeking proper compliance with existing rules such as the Allen County Building Code and the Allen County Zoning Ordinance.

In addition to the working group, city staff reached out to macro and micro economics educators at Indiana Tech whose students investigated current best practices around the country. The data showcased economic development incentives as well as how those can be implemented.

The proposal will feature further discussion during next week’s meeting.
