Waterloo Redevelopment Plans Focus On Housing Needs

Wikimedia Commons

The Waterloo Redevelopment Commission this week agreed to purchase two more properties to begin construction on a new building that will accommodate new business, housing and potentially office space.

The Ketch Kan Tavern and Warm-A-Heart buildings are now under agreement to purchase. Waterloo Deputy Town Manager Pam Howard estimates the Redevelopment Commission could have the necessary buildings to start their new project by the end of the summer.

Howard says  the town has seen an uptick in the need for housing. She says the city is trying to accommodate younger families moving in for work with the project, which is expected to be complete within a year and a half.

“I’m excited for the progress in Waterloo,” Howard said.

The total spent on the two buildings has not yet been disclosed.

The Redevelopment Commission donated a vacant lot to the nonprofit center, Warm-A-Heart. They plan to rebuild the soup kitchen along with a thrift store.
