Winter Weather Plan Sets Up Emergency Shelters

Lisa Ryan, WBOI News

Fort Wayne organizations signed a winter weather emergency plan Thursday for the city’s homeless.

The shelters will be offered by different agencies in Fort Wayne this winter as part of the city’s emergency shelter plan. The plan only goes into effect when wind chills reach below zero, but some shelters will open at other times as well.

Just Neighbors is one of the partner organizations and provides shelter for homeless families. Its director, Terry Anderson, says it is important that the groups work together to provide shelter for everyone who needs it this winter.

“This is truly a significant step in—in responding to some of the basic human needs of our citizens who are our most vulnerable, in deepest need, who are marginalized by our wider society,” Anderson said.

The Salvation Army will lead the groups in providing shelter. Other groups include the Rescue Mission, which will provide food and blankets.

The shelters will be able to house up to 2,500 people. One or more warming stations will also be set up in Fort Wayne community centers.
