Construction crews lowered the massive tunnel boring machine, nicknamed MamaJo into its hole on Monday to begin drilling Fort Wayne’s deep rock sewer tunnel.

Construction crews have spent the last year working on the Three Rivers Protection and Overflow Reduction Tunnel, as part of a broad effort to improve water quality in the city’s rivers.

The City of Fort Wayne will be receiving a tunnel boring machine later this summer, but it’s missing one thing: a name!

Fort Wayne’s Board of Public Works opened bidding Thursday for the largest public works project in the city’s history.
