State Health Department Reports 64 Flu-Related Deaths

Allen County health officials are establishing visitation restrictions at local healthcare facilities and hospitals due to a recent flu outbreak.

Health commissioner Deb McMahan says an aggressive strain of influenza A -- also classified as H3N2 -- poses severe risk to both very young and elderly populations, as well as patients with respiratory or heart problems.

UPDATE: The total number of flu-related deaths has reached 293, that’s up four from last week.

 

For the first time this flu season Allen County reported zero influenza-related deaths.

 

Last year, Indiana ended its flu season with a total of 103 deaths.

UPDATE: Hospitals Lift Visitor Restrictions

Allen County hospitals are lifting visitor restrictions, effective immediately. The restrictions were implemented in January as a precaution to the spread of influenza.


For the safety of patients and staff over the last 10 weeks, hospitals have been limiting visitors to two per patient at one time and only visitors who are at least 18 years of age.

 

Flu Takes Toll In Northern Indiana

The Indiana State Department of Health says Hoosiers are battling a widespread distribution of influenza-like illnesses. By Feb. 24, a total of 244 Indiana residents have died this season from what is believed to be flu-related illness.  

Over the course of the week between Feb. 17 and Feb. 24, four northern Indiana counties suffered enough influenza-associated deaths to put them over the threshold for reporting.

DeKalb, Elkhart, Noble, and St. Joseph counties all now have over five influenza-associated deaths. Adams, Grant and Allen counties were already over the threshold. Allen County now has 20 influenza-associated deaths, up two from the week before.
