The Northwest Allen County Schools board of trustees voted to temporarily reinstate the district’s mask mandate at Monday night’s meeting.

The resolution would require masks for all students and staff from September 1 until October 14.

The decision came following a significant number of students having to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 in the first few weeks of school.

The district faced criticism from a group of parents earlier this year over the continued mask mandates. The resolution passed with a 3-2 vote.

The board heard nearly three hours of public comments from parents, students and residents during the meeting. The resolution, however, was approved before those comments began.

Debates over the continuation of a mask mandate at Northwest Allen County Schools have continued over the past few weeks, leading to a divide within the school board.

On Wednesday, the board brought in five health professionals to discuss the reasons why students should continue wearing masks through the last few weeks of school, according to WANE-15.

Board President Kent Somers said he was not “in full agreement” with the statements from health professionals.

On Wednesday, Northwest Allen County Schools began meal services for students who rely on school meals during closures due to coronavirus.

The district is offering both breakfast and lunch to students who might otherwise not get these meals during the day when school is closed.

The meals can be picked up at one of the two pick-up locations, Huntertown Elementary and Carroll High School, or can be delivered if transportation isn’t available.
