Protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis have brought attention to the spending priorities of municipalities, especially when it comes to police departments. What are the funding sources for Fort Wayne? What are police officers asked to do and why? What happens when funds are reprioritized?

Community-led public safety reform measures were announced Monday by Indianapolis leaders.

The new efforts will be data-driven and bring together stakeholders from all areas, and track progress through a partnership with the NYU School of Law, Criminal Justice Lab. 

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett says the city has a long and continued history of racially based criminal injustices.

"The mistrust that we see today has roots that are both shallow and deep," says Hogsett.
