Black Lives Matter Groups Protest In South Bend

Black Lives Matter protesters demonstrated in South Bend over the weekend to talk about their experiences with police brutality. They also issued a list of eight demands directed at Mayor Pete Buttigieg and other city officials. 

Protesters marched to the County-City building in South Bend after hearing stories from black women about their experiences with police. Many came to support demands including the firing of two officers involved in the shooting death of Eric Logan and financial compensation for Logan’s family.

A special prosecutor assigned to investigate the fatal police shooting of 54-year-old Eric Logan spoke to the press this morning in South Bend. He has marshalled detectives from the Indiana State Police force to aid in the task.

Several South Bend activists and a family member of Eric Logan expressed their frustration at the lack of changes following the police shooting of Logan on June 16. They also started a petition demanding that Mayor Pete Buttigieg recommend punitive action against the officer.


At the site where Eric Logan was fatally shot, activists called Sgt. Ryan O’Neill’s paid leave since the incident “unfair” to Logan’s family and to taxpayers.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg updated the city’s Common Council Monday night on his progress in addressing the police shooting of Eric Logan on June 16. He announced no specific plans, but gave a general preview of things to come.

  More than two weeks after the fatal shooting of a black man in South Bend by a white police officer, ministers from across the city gathered to call for spiritual guidance. They also gave Mayor Pete Buttigieg a packet of recommendations to begin healing the city.


A dozen ministers from congregations around South Bend prayed in the lobby of the County-City building Monday morning. Many pleaded for an end to the shootings in South Bend and called for citizens to pray for love, peace, and truth.
