Manchester University

After an IPFW student was named a Fulbright Scholar last week, another student from Manchester University has earned the distinction.

The Fulbright grant is awarded to college students who show an interest in teaching or doing research in foreign countries, and provides these students a chance to spend time as cultural ambassadors for host nations.

Emily Pleadwell is Manchester University’s latest Fulbright Scholar. She spent last summer teaching English as a second language to Vietnamese domestic violence survivors in Southern California. Her Fulbright distinction will give her the opportunity to spend the next year in Vietnam.

Manchester’s associate dean of academic resources Stacy Erickson-Pesetski says the amount of Fulbright Scholars in the region gives Northeast Indiana a positive international reputation.

“I think it really shows in this area that we’re very concerned about the rest of the world and that we’re very willing to sort of get out of our comfort zones and move away for a year," said Erickson-Pesetski. "These students are great examples for the rest of us.”

Pleadwell is Manchester University’s 30th Fulbright Scholar since 1996, the most of any school per capita in Indiana during that time.
