A group of Carroll Middle School students spent the month of January collecting socks to donate to the Rescue Mission.
The sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Anna Garmatz’s Special Ed Applied Skills class started with a goal of 200 pairs of socks. They ended up donating nearly 1,800.
“Oh my gosh, I am so proud,” Garmatz said.
Garmatz said she started out the project when she learned that socks are the number one most requested item at homeless shelters, but that she had been looking for a way for her students to give back.
“So much of the time, people in the community help my students and I wanted them to have the opportunity to help others,” she said.
The students were all excited and proud to see their efforts come to fruition as the socks were transferred from the bus into the Rescue Mission Wednesday morning. Student Piper Yager said she had a particularly emotional reaction.
“I almost cried,” she said.
A group of 12 students helped collect the socks, with one student bringing in more than 400 pairs on their own. They bought the socks with the donations they gathered from their church community.
