Residents Reminded Of CSO Alerts For Spring Weather

Zach Bernard/WBOI News

Now that it’s officially spring, northeast Indiana can start expecting more rain in the coming months. Fort Wayne City Utilities is reminding residents that they can be notified of combined sewer overflow events that may occur.

A combined sewer overflow is when the city’s pipes get too full during rain showers, and some of the excess flows to the rivers; Fort Wayne is one of 105 communities in Indiana where this occurs.

Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid consuming or being in certain parts of the rivers within 72-hours of a CSO event. City Utilities has set up a notification system that would inform residents of a forthcoming CSO event to prepare for the coming days.

You can sign up for the alerts by visiting the City of Fort Wayne’s website.

City Utilities is in the midst of a massive $380 million project to improve the city’s water supply by renovating and overhauling its sewer system with an expected completion of 2025. Despite the recent coronavirus outbreak, construction on that project continues, keeping the timeline on track.
