Henry Announces New Police Chief

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry announced his appointment Monday for the city’s new police chief. Garry Hamilton will be the first African-American to hold the position, replacing outgoing chief Rusty York, who was recently named the city’s new public safety director.

At a press conference, Mayor Henry said Hamilton’s priorities will be to improve communication with other law enforcement agencies and the community, and to instate a strategic plan to address homicides and violent crimes in the city.

Fort Wayne Set To Reinstitute A Director Of Public Safety

The City of Fort Wayne may soon be getting a new Director of Public Safety. Mayor Tom Henry announced Tuesday that current Police Chief Rusty York is his for the new position. The job is being reinstated in part as a response to the near record number of murders the city’s seen this year.

Henry explains that York will oversee the both the Fort Wayne Police and Fire Departments. He’ll also aid collaboration between other public safety agencies, Fort Wayne Community Schools, and faith-based communities.
