Allen County COVID-19 Death Toll At 81

Allen County Department of Health

Another two deaths were reported in Allen County Monday. That brings the total to 81 residents who have died from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Statewide, 14 new deaths were reported Monday and 244 new positive cases were reported.

Allen County has 1,892 positive cases. The number of deaths has gone up locally in recent days. Officials have expressed concern about the amount of hospitalizations as well.

One of the most active areas in Indiana for the disease caused by the novel coronavirus is Elkhart County. The north central county has 1,741 cases, one of the largest per capita rates of infection in Indiana.

Officials at Parkview Health Network and Lutheran Health Network have expressed concern in recent days over rising hospitalizations, due to both COVID-19 and the resumption of routine surgeries and other care.

Northeast Indiana, particularly Allen County also shows a large spike in cases, when compared per capita with other counties around the state. The increase corresponds to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s decision to reopen the state in early May.

As restrictions have eased, case counts have gone up.

The area has also been the scene of many protests in recent days, and while masks have been worn by some marchers and police, others have not been wearing masks. Social distancing, handwashing and other sanitary practices are not easily observed in crowds.

Officials around the world have expressed concern about another rise in COVID-19 cases in the wake of protests stemming from the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.
