FWCS Moves Graduation to a Virtual Commencement

Fort Wayne Community Schools announced Thursday that their traditional graduation ceremonies would be replaced by a virtual commencement this year.

Students will receive their diplomas and other awards during a drive-through event on their schools’ scheduled graduation date.

FWCS spokeswoman Krista Stockman says they knew there was no solution that would be the same for students as the traditional ceremonies.

“If we postpone them, then kids are already heading off in different directions - going off to college, going to the military. So, we just knew that there was no really great answer to this issue.”

Students will be able to pick up their caps and gowns, as well as a yard sign declaring them as a member of the class of 2020 at their respective high schools during scheduled pick-up times.

Stockman says they are finalizing plans and will continue to release them. Seniors will receive assigned times when they can pick up their materials, in order to stagger arrivals. South Side High School will have pick ups on May 12, Snider on May 14, Northrop on May 15, Wayne on May 19 and North Side on May 20.
