The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of School Trustees met Monday night to vote on measures to help the district during the COVID-19 crisis.
They approved a resolution to grant the Superintendent, or a designee, the ability to carry out any necessary action for the safety and well-being of the district while the schools are closed.
Superintendent Wendy Robinson addressed the priorities for the district during the closures.
“Our intent is for, as long as this is going on, we’ll try to keep that focus on academics. If there are things we can pass out during the time that we’re feeding kids, we intend to do that. But I think we pretty much have an assignment for everybody.”
Robinson says the district is looking into letting people sign up to volunteer to hand out meals as well as trying to hand out materials students need when they come to pick up meals.
She also says they are prioritizing supporting seniors to ensure they get their credits and are able to stay on track to graduate.
Additional measures taken by the school board Monday night include
- Core content for grades K-11: FWCS Curriculum Department will provide learning activities, and teachers will support students using the District’s learning management system (LMS), an online platform. Students will be familiar with this platform, as it is used in the classroom, and it allows students and parents to communicate with teachers. Each week, FWCS will share updates on what work students would have been completing if they were in the classroom.
- Credit recovery for grade 12: Seniors needing credit in various classes in order to graduate have been enrolled in Edgenuity online courses. Students will take a pre-test to determine the specific standards to be mastered and will work at their own pace.
- Dual credit, Advanced Placement and CTE courses for specific certification for grade 12: These seniors (along with some juniors) must earn credit in specific high-level courses not offered by Edgenuity. FWCS teachers will provide support for students using the District’s LMS or PowerSchool.
- Other courses for grade 12: Some seniors must earn credit in unique courses that fit the state’s graduation pathways but are not offered by Edgenuity. FWCS teachers will provide instruction for students using the LMS.
FWCS will continue to serve meals from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to students at all elementary schools and early childhood centers.
