Arts United Crosswalk Murals Nearing Completion

Zach Bernard/WBOI News

After a week of painting, Artlink is nearing completion of crosswalk murals on the Arts United campus in downtown Fort Wayne.

Artlink proposed downtown crosswalk murals to the City a year and a half ago. However, they couldn’t get approval from the City’s traffic engineers, because city guidelines for crosswalks do not include details about murals.

With the help of the Arts United's "Amplify Art!" grant -- which included a $1,000 donation from Arts United -- Artlink raised enough money to paint the crosswalks of the Arts United private campus, and have spent the last week painting.

Artlink’s Rebecca Stockert was a leader in the campaign for the crosswalks. She says it’s important for Fort Wayne’s art to be available for the public to enjoy.

“Everybody walks around the road, it’s in the public view all the time," said Stockert. "We’re really excited to make art more accessible to the public so everybody can see it.”

Stockert says Artlink will go back to the drawing board once the murals are finished to decide the next beautification project. They hope the murals are completed by Tuesday.

Last week, WBOI’s Julia Meek spoke with the artists who designed the crosswalk murals. You can find her interview with them here.
