Aunt Millie's Fort Wayne Bakery To Cease Production In 2018

Aunt Millie’s Bakeries announced Monday it will be closing its bakery on Pearl Street in downtown Fort Wayne, with 91 employees losing their jobs.

The bakery is one of seven that Aunt Millie’s operates in the Midwest, and plans to phase out production by April 2018.

In a statement, Aunt Millie’s Bakery president John Popp says the decision is “a critical step in reducing excess capacity and costs, and to... maintain [their] leadership position in the baking industry.”

While the bakery is closing, Aunt Millie’s will maintain a presence in Fort Wayne: company headquarters, which employs over 100 people, will remain downtown. The company’s two outlet stores will stay open, as well.

Aunt Millie’s Bakery opened downtown in 1901. Its iconic “sliced bread” sign was installed in 1957, and is also expected to stay.
