January Question Of The Month: What Should Be Our Community's New Years Resolution?

Rebecca Green/WBOI News

In January, WBOI launched its Question of the Month series, asking listeners to share their thoughts about issues and topics relevant to northeast Indiana.

We started the series off asking what you think should be our community's New Year's resolution.  We received several responses, with answers ranging from improving our roads, taking in our local arts and culture scene, and being nicer to each other.

Listen to and read responses here:

"My pet project is The Landing.  I want to see that come to life in 2019 and it should." - Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry

"I say we commit to good roads. Finish the construction, fix potholes and cracks.  Make Ft. Wayne a great place to drive and live!" - Jim Parry

"I believe mental health issues are the root cause of  a majority of  the community's most serious issues. Improving access to mental healthcare  could be such a positive move in the community. I do volunteer work with  guys on the edge with addiction and homelessness and find issues locating medium to long term care service beds. An active effort to get the people that need the services signed up for the assistance they need would be  beneficial too." - Gregg Harpel

Our wonderful city is growing in every way, including the vibrant arts scene. I propose a communal New Years resolution to explore those artistic offerings. Take in a quiet afternoon at the museum of art, enjoy a thought-provoking play, or a night full of music. What art can bring is self-reflection and refuge in today's busy world.  Make 2019 artsy! - Caleb Young

"Visit and spend money at new local businesses and entertainments and give them a chance, instead of sticking with your old favorites." - Jeannette Jaquish

This year let's focus on embracing, empowering, and supporting our local marginalized communities. Fort Wayne's an amazing, progressive city that supports the arts, children, families, and humanitarian endeavors. With intention we can make a difference in the lives of those who do not fit the norms. Instead of being considered a drain on local resources, those individuals  can be valuable contributors to our city's progress. So, I say let's step into this challenge and rock the status quo!  - Ellie Hadsall

"I believe our community's New Years resolution should be to ask the question, 'How are you?' more meaningfully and to also answer that question more meaningfully.  There's a lot more to the person we interact with and if we don't invest the time in getting to know each other better then we will never really develop the relationships that strengthen our community and make us all the better for it." - Ahmed Abdelmageed

Thanks to everyone who participated! And since we're into the month of February, it's time for a new question! We want to know what you think is our community's greatest asset.

Record an audio response on your smartphone or computer and email it to news@nipr.fm. You can also submit written responses.
