The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo has postponed its opening day for its first time in 56 years.

On Tuesday afternoon, the zoo announced that it would not be opening as scheduled because of the coronavirus. Last year, the zoo opened on the last weekend in April.

Zoo officials said they have no idea when they will be able to open the facility to visitors, but are in contact with local health officials and will open as soon as they are told it is safe to do so.

The zoo staff continues to make lesson plans, educational videos and nature activities for area teachers and parents who are educating their children at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Zoo members will receive credit for the weeks the zoo was closed to their memberships once the opening day for this season is identified.
