Council confirms GFL Environmental as new Fort Wayne garbage hauler

Fort Wayne City Council officially approved GFL Environmental as the city's new garbage hauler on a unanimous vote Tuesday night.

The new contract had been approved by the Board of Public Works earlier in the day, with Council being the final step in the process.

GFL will begin collection service on July 1, once the contract with Red River expires.

While members of the body expressed relief that there was finally a path forward after Red River makes its last pickup on June 30, some were concerned by the speed of the process in getting GFL finalized as the new hauler.

Council president Jason Arp asked members to vote purely on the options presented to them, and GFL is the smoothest way forward.

GFL will not do bulk pickup immediately, and it was suggested that the city may contract out that service to another hauler.

At-large Democrat Glynn Hines noted that he didn't trust the idea of the city itself handling bulk pickup, because members would be the ones on the hook to explain to constituents if things were going poorly.
