Open Streets Fort Wayne Returning To Calhoun Street

Zach Bernard/WBOI News

The City of Fort Wayne announced the return of the Open Streets event on Calhoun Street, which will take place at the end of August.

This will be the fourth Open Streets event thus far, and the first since last year’s was postponed due to COVID-19. Open Streets promotes biking and walking along Fort Wayne’s 1.5-mile South Calhoun Street corridor from Superior to Pontiac streets, supporting businesses along the 25-block stretch.

Throughout the day, participating businesses will offer specials including some free items, in addition to “over 100” free activities like live music, pickleball, yoga, and even a bubble machine along the route.

But the announcement comes one day after Northeast Indiana logged its highest positivity rate for COVID-19 since February, at 7.4%. Tuesday’s 1,610 positive tests are also the most over that period of time.

Open Streets program manager Amy Hartzog says she’s watching the numbers closely, and that having the event outdoors works to their advantage.

“It’s the safest place, aside from by yourself, that you can be with all this open ventilation, this open air," Hartzog said. "So I feel pretty good about what we’re doing, and again with 25 blocks, lots of space to spread out so we don’t have to be too close to each other, but we can still be connected.”

Open Streets Fort Wayne is slated to return on Sunday, August 29 from 12-4 pm.
