Students at St. Joseph Central Elementary took advantage of National Bike to School Day today by meeting up in a nearby park to bike to school together.
Kids and parents met in a nearby park in Jonathon Oaks to bike the few blocks over to the elementary school on Wednesday morning.
They were joined by teachers and bike patrol officers to ensure the trip was made safely. Principal Susan Tieman said with so many students in biking or walking distance, it's important to encourage safe habits.
“We just wanted to provide our students the opportunity as a school family to ride our bikes to school together and practice being safe and healthy living," Tieman said.
Last month, the school also offered a bike safety program to fourth and fifth graders where they brought in the Fort Wayne Police Department Bike Patrol Officers and staff from the Parkview Trauma Center to share safety tips and demonstrate the importance of helmets.
The day is also meant to be a reminder to adult drivers to be aware and patient as students walk or bike to school.
