WBOI Presents: September News Roundup 2018

After a short delay for the Fall Fund Drive, this week on WBOI Presents we feature our September News Roundup.

We'll expand on some of the stories that aired on 89.1 WBOI during the month of September, and we will hear the very latest from WBOI's Zach Bernard and our friends from Indiana Public Broadcasting and Side Effects Public Media.

We’ll begin this program with a conversation with Dr. Stephen Ross. He is a local forensic psychologist. He is well known for his work in legal and religious circles, dealing with mental health. Our conversation will deal with the trauma abuse survivors experience and some of the information discussed may be upsetting.

For 10 years, federal laws required insurance companies to cover mental illness on par with other medical issues. But as Side Effects Public Media’s Christine Herman reports, many people still go to extreme lengths to pay for costly mental health treatments.

Araceli Gomez-Aldana began the next chapter of her career with Side Effects Public Media in September. She’s off to a strong start. After reporting on public health in northeast Indiana, her latest effort looked at Alzheimer’s disease and how your sense of smell may give doctors clues as to whether or not you’ll have to deal with Alzheimer’s in the future.

Harrison College closed this past month, the most recent in a series of closures involving for-profit colleges. WBOI’s Ben Clemmer spoke with Karen Francisco from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette to dive deeper into this topic and find out where students and communities can go from here.

If you’ve been down the beer aisle lately, you’ve probably noticed the growing number of barrel-aged beers. The popularity of the drinks means there’s more demand for used barrels. As Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Barbara Brosher reports, that’s creating new businesses opportunities for distilleries and turning an underground industry mainstream.
