Fort Wayne actress and vocalist, Mikki White practices her one-woman role in "His Eye Is on the Sparrow", which opens this weekend at First Presbyterian Theater.

Ethel Waters was one of the most popular African-American singers and actresses of the 1920's. And she continued blazing trails and collecting awards in multiple entertainment fields until her death in 1977.

Beginning this week, First Presbyterian Theater honors the actress and her legacy with a one-woman biographic play titled "His Eye Is on the Sparrow", named after Waters' favorite Gospel hymn.

WBOI's Julia Meek met with the show's star, Mikki White, to discuss the rewards and the relevancy of sharing Waters' story on the 21st-century stage.
