Trading Press Camera For Paint And Canvas: An Artist's Perspective

Credit Courtesy/Sam Hoffman
Street scenes, including cafes and outdoor dining, are among Hoffman's favorite painting subjects.

After nearly 30 years as a photojournalist, Fort Wayne artist, Sam Hoffman, put down his camera, picked up a paintbrush, and began a 2nd career "on canvas."

He attributes his "eye for a picture," as well as his distinctive painting style, to years spent as Photographer's Mate in the US Navy, and later, as staff photographer for the Journal Gazette.

To focus in on the results of this transition, WBOI's Julia Meek invited Hoffman into the studio to discuss how his photography background influences his painting style, and drives his current perspective.

You can learn more about Sam Hoffman, and his paintings at his Still Water Fine Art website.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
