Clean Drains Fort Wayne presents gallery on the ground

Nearly a year ago, Friends of the Rivers, a local conservation organization, challenged the entire community to be River SmART (W/ ART!) as they launched a three year initiative to emphasize the value and importance of preserving and protecting Fort Wayne’s three rivers—the St. Joseph, St. Marys and Maumee.

The project, called Clean Drains Fort Wayne, is a collaborative effort between the group and Fort Wayne City Utilities that officially began with a series of storm drain street-art mural installations throughout the city.

Be listening to WBOI later this month for an update on Phase 2 of the campaign, in celebration of Earth Day 2022, which will include a neighborhood involvement report and a rundown on the FWCS elementary classes now participating in the program.

And in the meantime, here’s a photo tour of the 33 original Storm Drain Murals, their creators and individual locations.

You can keep in touch and get involved at the Friends of the Rivers website.

Listen to the original conversation WBOI’s Julia Meek had about Clean Drains Fort Wayne with project spearheaders, Nancy Stewart and Pam Holocher last September, in honor of World River Day here.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
