Downtown Fire Ravages Multiple Buildings

Towers of black and gray smoke billowed over the eastern edge of downtown Fort Wayne Monday as a massive warehouse fire kept first responders busy into the night.

The multiple building blaze was reported at 2:19 p.m. Monday at 1200 Herbert St. More than 50 firefighters responded from townships around the area.

While Fort Wayne Fire Department Spokeswoman Stacey Fleming said firefighters had the fire under control around 8:30 p.m., crews stayed through the night to douse hot spots and assess the structure.

Fleming reported two firefighters sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and because of the size and damage of the fire, Fleming expects a lengthy investigation.
