Musical Device Can Help Save Lives

Lisa Ryan, WBOI News

Metronomes help musicians keep time. But they can also help save lives. Fort Wayne firefighters will now use metronomes when giving CPR.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry announced that music retailer Sweetwater donated forty metronomes to the Fort Wayne Fire Department to help responders provide quality chest compressions. Assistant Fire Chief Doug Call says the ideal compression rate is 100-120 times per minute.

“It’s been proven that effective compressions, increases the rate of survivability in these individual,” Call said. “Up to this point, we’ve never really had a tool we’ve been able to use to ensure our rate of compressions is proper.”

The metronomes will be kept in firefighters’ CPR kits to help provide emergency care.
