Fort Wayne Schools Want Students To "b Instrumental"

Fort Wayne Community Schools Foundation

Fort Wayne Community Schools Foundation launched a music program Tuesday that plans to give 3,300 instruments to area students. The “b instrumental” program plans to increase music education in Fort Wayne schools.

Fort Wayne students played music at Sweetwater Sound to raise awareness and funds for the program. This initiative gives seventh graders instruments and pays for the cost of replacing them throughout all four years of high school. The program will also pay for music lessons.

Right now, students at three Fort Wayne middle schools have received instruments, but the district wants to have all 11 middle schools participate once they raise the money needed. The foundation plans to raise $3.6 million dollars over the next six years.

Spokeswoman for Fort Wayne Community Schools, Melanie Hall, says music education is important for students.

“The enjoyment of music is very important, and it helps kids become well rounded,” Hall said. “They learn responsibility, they learn teamwork, and we just think it’s very beneficial to our students.”

The goal is to provide instruments for students who couldn’t normally afford them. The funding goal is projected to cover the program for the next fifteen years.
